  • Visit the national museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa, located in Wellington which is treasure of the lost worlds. Consisting of a huge 21meter skeleton of pygmy blue whale and the world's largest known squid, this museum also features New Zealand's bird species which were hunted to extinction, replicas of the giant moa and Haast's eagle, the largest eagle known to have existed. The entry to the museum is free, though charges apply to some short-term exhibitions and activities.
  • If you are nature lover, then Victoria Esplanade Gardens at Palmerston North is the best place for you which is composed of a cherry drive, large duck pond, an avenue of phoenix palms, a miniature railway through native bush, children's playground, aviaries, paddling pool and free electric barbecues. This garden was opened in 1897 to celebrate 60th jubilee of Queen Victoria and makes a wonderful place to have fun.
  • Don't miss the self guided wine tour at Marlborough which is a home to the country's largest wine production region having 100 vineyards. You can taste some wine for free and take a tour to nearby areas if you have a rental car.
  • Watch the gannets on Muriwai Beach on west coast of Auckland in July when they re-establish their colonies. Also you can view the fur seals which regularly feed and rest on Oaia Island, about 1.6km off the Muriwai Beach coast.
